A headache is pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck. The most common types of headaches are tension and migraine.

Tension headaches are likely caused by tight muscles in your shoulders, neck, scalp, and jaw. They may be related to stress, depression, anxiety, a head injury, or poor posture. The pain, which tends to be dull or squeezing, is often found on both sides of the head, and is usually accompanied by shoulder(s), neck or jaw tightness or pain.

Migraine headaches are severe headaches that are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and light and sound sensitivity. The pain, which tends to be on one side of the head, may be pounding or pulsating. Some people experience optical auras and numbness in the face, arms or hands, all of which are warning signs that the headaches is about to start. The following have been linked to triggering migraines: foods such as chocolate, certain cheeses, MSG, caffeine withdrawal, lack of sleep, dehydration, and alcohol.

The chiropractic physician’s goals with all treatment are to reduce pain, restore normal joint function and improve muscle function. Chiropractic care helps the body to heal itself and prevent future injury.
